The results of a benchmark of modern file systems have been published

September 19, 2026

Researchers conducted a comparative performance testing of popular file systems Btrfs, ZFS, bcachefs, ext4 and XFS under high loads. The tests evaluated the stability and speed of data processing when performing classic read and write operations in modern operating systems.

The results showed that file systems with support for advanced features, such as ZFS, Btrfs and bcachefs, successfully passed most of the tests, demonstrating high fault tolerance. At the same time, traditional solutions ext4 and XFS in a number of scenarios with intense loads showed failures, which led to the completion of tests with errors.

The benchmark covers a wide range of operations, including metadata handling and parallel file writing. The use of bcachefs showed competitive results compared to more mature analogs, despite the status of a relatively new file system in the Linux kernel. Complete measurement data and testing methodology are available in open access for analysis by the community.

The obtained data allows system administrators to more accurately choose a file system for specific tasks where data integrity is critical under peak loads. The choice between ZFS and bcachefs can now be based on specific performance metrics, rather than just functional capabilities.
