
OpenAI has closed a deal to buy startup Glass Imaging, which specializes in computer vision technologies and improving mobile photography quality, with the deal amounting to over 300 million dollars.
Company Glass Imaging is known for its algorithms that allow for software compensation of physical limitations of compact smartphone sensors, using neural network methods to restore details, suppress noise and correct color rendering, making it possible to achieve image quality comparable to that of full-size cameras.
As part of the acquisition, the startup team will join OpenAI's subdivision responsible for developing multimodal capabilities of models, and the integration of Glass Imaging's developments will enable the company to improve the processing of visual data from mobile device cameras in real-time.
The purchase testifies to OpenAI's intention to strengthen hardware integration of its solutions, and the implementation of specialized image processing algorithms directly into the stack of neural network models may become a key advantage for the company's future consumer devices.
