Rheinmetall has opened the source code of the Battlesuite protocol
German defense conglomerate Rheinmetall has published the source code of the Battlesuite protocol. This middleware solution based on the DDS standard is designed to organize data exchange between sensors and software in combat systems.
The protocol provides integration of various armament components into a single network. Developers have access to support for popular programming languages, including C++, Java, C#, and Python. The publication of the code allows third-party integrators to create compatible modules for interacting with the company's hardware complexes.
The technical documentation for version 9.10.0 describes the architecture of node interaction, methods of telemetry transmission, and control of peripheral devices. The use of the DDS (Data Distribution Service) standard ensures real-time operation with low latency, which is critical for fire control and reconnaissance systems.
The opening of the Battlesuite source code marks a transition to a more modular approach in the development of defense software. Previously, such protocols were closed proprietary developments available only to internal Rheinmetall teams. Now external contractors can develop their own extensions without waiting for updates from the main manufacturer.
