Major technology companies have created a DRAM shortage in the market

September 17, 2026

Major tech sector players have almost completely depleted available stocks of DRAM standard memory. Due to the frenzied demand for server equipment for training and operating neural networks, corporations have switched to long-term contracts with chip manufacturers, which has led to a sharp reduction in supply for the consumer segment.

Analysts note that the current situation is provoking a rise in prices for memory modules for ordinary users. The main part of the production capacity of leading vendors, such as Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, is reserved for the needs of data centers, where huge amounts of memory with high bandwidth are required to work with HBM (High Bandwidth Memory). This creates a structural imbalance, in which standard components for PCs become a scarce commodity.

According to industry experts, long-term commitments to cloud providers and AI model developers make it impossible to quickly saturate the retail market. Manufacturers prioritize high-margin orders, leaving retailers with limited inventory and forcing them to revise their pricing policy upwards.

The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the transition to new memory standards, such as DDR5, requires significant investments in re-equipping factories. In a situation where almost the entire increase in the production of high-density products goes to meet the needs of artificial intelligence infrastructure, the consumer market is facing a long-term period of price instability and limited choice of components for assembling personal computers.
