Waymo launches a fleet of self-driving taxis in Singapore

Company Waymo has officially announced plans to deploy a fleet of fully electric self-driving cars in Singapore. The project launch is scheduled for next year, which will be the company's first major foray into the Asian market.
At the initial stage, specialists will begin manual mapping of city streets and conduct validation runs to collect data on road infrastructure. This process is necessary for adapting control algorithms to the specifics of local traffic and the density of Singapore's development.
After completing the preparatory period, the company intends to apply to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for permission to operate fully autonomous vehicles. According to the roadmap, achieving full autonomy is planned for 2027.
The use of exclusively electric platforms is in line with Singapore's strategy to reduce its carbon footprint in urban transport. The fleet will be integrated into the existing city transportation system, providing an automated taxi service for residents and visitors to the metropolis.
The expansion of Waymo's geographic presence demonstrates the company's readiness to scale its technologies beyond the US. The project's success will depend on passing regulatory checks and the system's ability to adapt to the complex conditions of intense traffic in a tropical climate.
