Google restricted access to API in Android 17 QPR1 for third-party developers
Company Google has changed its update distribution strategy, for the first time since version 3.x adding new APIs to Android 17 QPR1 without publishing the source code in AOSP.
New software interfaces have become exclusive to Pixel series devices. This decision violates the long-standing practice of simultaneous release of APIs for the open project Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and third-party manufacturers.
Developers of alternative firmware, including the GrapheneOS project, have faced the impossibility of integrating these features into their builds. According to current plans, access to these APIs within AOSP is expected no earlier than the release of QPR2, which is scheduled for December 2026.
This step actually creates a temporary gap in functionality between the proprietary version of the system from Google and the open code base. This limits the capabilities of third-party developers to adapt new system features for a wide range of Android devices.
Google's policy change is causing discussions in the developer community, as it complicates support for current OS versions for independent projects, forcing them to wait for the official opening of the code for a long period.
