Kevin O'Leary's data center in Canada faces a lawsuit
November 1, 2026
A major $70 billion data center project in Alberta, promoted by Kevin O'Leary, is facing legal challenges. The lawsuit was prompted by the facility's unprecedented energy consumption and heat output.
According to court documents, the project will generate a daily amount of heat equivalent to the energy of 23 atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima. Due to this massive environmental impact, the local Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation community has demanded a full environmental assessment of the project.
The incident reflects growing tension between AI infrastructure developers and local communities over the colossal energy and environmental appetites of new computing centers.
