The SETI Institute has deployed AI agents to operate the ATA telescope
November 3, 2026

The SETI Institute, in collaboration with the Breakthrough Listen initiative, has begun using autonomous AI agents based on the Allen Telescope Array to manage the radio observatory and analyze signals.
The new system automates data monitoring and antenna pointing. Tasks that previously required weeks of manual labor are now completed in a matter of hours.
During initial tests, the software detected a pulsar in the Crab Nebula in real time. This was a first for the complex's automated systems.
The implementation of autonomous control allows the observatory to process massive streams of cosmic radio signals at high speed and reduces the workload on duty researchers.
