OpenAI used GPT-6 Astra to design hardware

The OpenAI hardware team used the GPT-6 Astra model to develop a physical device for the Codex coding agent. The creation process took less than a week.
The artificial intelligence handled the entire design of the chassis, printed circuit board, and firmware. Several rounds of refinement were required before production began because the neural network initially failed to account for manufacturing tolerances.
Additionally, the company reported the existence of a newer internal model that demonstrates significantly higher results on a specialized OpenAI engineering benchmark. Detailed technical specifications and the architecture of this prototype have not been disclosed.
This practical result demonstrates a shift toward end-to-end automation of hardware design using large language models, although controlling parameter accuracy at the production stage still requires human engineer involvement.
