Sam Altman will speak before the United Nations Security Council
The CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman will brief the UN Security Council next week, with the main topic of discussion being security and global regulation of artificial intelligence technologies.
The meeting will take place at the organization's headquarters in New York, where participants plan to consider the risks associated with the uncontrolled development of generative models, as well as discuss the need to create international standards for controlling the development of powerful AI systems, as part of a series of UN consultations with technology sector leaders.
Previously, Sam Altman has repeatedly called for the creation of an international AI oversight body, similar to the IAEA, with the company's position being that models with computational power exceeding certain threshold values should be licensed to prevent potential threats to national and global security.
Such initiatives highlight the shift in the AI discussion from purely technical achievements to the realm of geopolitics, as regulators around the world seek to balance innovation stimulation with risk limitation associated with autonomous systems capable of influencing critical infrastructure and the information environment.
