Anthropic updated Claude Code to support agent configuration files

Company Claude Code has implemented an update that expands the capabilities of customizing the behavior of the AI agent in the development environment. Now the tool automatically reads the AGENTS.md file if the standard Claude.md file is missing in the project's root directory.
This change is aimed at unifying configuration files for various AI tools. Previously, the system was rigidly tied to searching for instructions in Claude.md, which created conflicts when using multiple agents in one repository. Now developers can store system prompts and behavior rules in AGENTS.md, ensuring compatibility with other tools that support this standard.
The update is already available to all users of the CLI tool. For correct operation, it is enough to place the instruction file in the project's root directory. The priority system is set up so that Claude.md retains priority when both files are present simultaneously, which allows avoiding accidental changes in agent behavior when migrating settings.
Integration of AGENTS.md support simplifies context management for large projects where several AI assistants work on the codebase. This allows developers to centrally define interaction rules, coding styles, and security restrictions without duplicating configurations for each individual tool. Details of the discussion of the changes are available in the developer community.
