Gravity Linux has released an alpha version for the Mac mini with the M4 chip
The team of developers of Gravity Linux presented the first alpha version of the distribution adapted to work on Mac mini computers with the M4 processor. The main achievement of the release was the implementation of basic support for the graphics accelerator (GPU) and display controller (DCP).
The current build is intended exclusively for testing by developers and is not recommended for everyday use. The system retains a high degree of instability, and a number of critical functions, including sleep mode (suspend) and the operation of Thunderbolt ports, are currently completely absent.
The integration of GPU support allows the system to display an image and interact with the graphical core of the M4 chip, which is a key step for the full porting of Linux to the latest generation of Apple Silicon architecture. Developers continue to work on drivers to ensure stable performance in conditions of limited documentation for Apple's proprietary hardware.
Details about the current limitations and development progress are available in the discussion on Hacker News. The project aims to create a full-fledged Linux environment for enthusiasts using current Apple hardware for tasks that require local computing power.
